Hi all,
.
Its circus time again! Admissions season. Loads of decisions to make. Loads of data available, but very little information. Having gone through the entire thing last year, I thought I’d write a set of articles in aid of the poor souls trying to get in this time
.
I’ll be talking about IIT admissions only, as my knowledge is limited to that. I’ll assume that people have decided to study here. Here or abroad is a question that must’ve been answered by now
.
One of the first things to decide once you’ve decided to do your PG in India is whether to go for an MS or for an MTech. I wrote a detailed reply to this question in gatementor.com, on which the following is based.
MS or MTech?
FACTS:
.
- MTech and MS need ~60 credits (or a scaled value, depending on the institution)
- MTech is 2 years;
MS is 1 1/2 years to 3 years
- MTech by definition is a course program, where the emphasis is on advanced coursework spanning various areas;
MS by definition is a research program, where the emphasis is on doing ORIGINAL work in one particular area.
- MTech credits is split as ~40 coursework and ~20 project;
MS credits split as ~20 coursework and ~40 thesis
- MTech courses span different areas;
MS coursework is typically chosen to provide knowledge in your chosen area of research
- MTech project (~1 year) is not necessarily research oriented;
MS thesis is research-oriented
- MTech in India is equivalent to an “MS with project” option in the US
MS in India is equivalent to an “MS with thesis” option in the US
.
.
MY OPINIONS:
.
It must be understood that one is not better than the other – both are equivalent programs. At least on paper. But the public perception and the perception amongst students (as evinced by the trends) is that MTech is better than MS. iIdisagree; both cannot be compared. They’re like the cliched apples and oranges. Is apple better because its sweet? Does it mean being tangy is bad? No such comparison can be made.
.
.
How to choose between MS and MTech
.
Decide what you want first. If you’re interested in working in one particular area, then MS is the thing for you. If you are not able to decide and want to taste different areas in CS, then MTech is the thing for you.
.
I’ll tell you my case:
I didn’t get a GATE rank good enough to get Direct Admission, but got interview calls. I got an admit at IITD (JCA) and IITK(Mtech CS) and IISc (Msc Engg. EC), but I chose IITM (MS) because this suited my interests best. I am interested in VLSI/Computer Architecture/OS. My institute is really good for VLSI, and there is a prof here with whom I really wanted to work. My research area here is precisely what I mentioned. The coursework I’ve done/doing here are Computer Architecture, Digital Design Testing, Digital Design Verification, Device Drivers Practicum and Mathematical Concepts for CS. No more courses. No dumb SE or Networks. Total focus on one area, and an extensive thesis on that. Pretty cool no? ![]()
.
Whereas if you’re an MTech, you’ll have 3 or 4 courses that are compulsory. Apart from that, you need to choose 5 or 6 papers as electives. You also need to do a semester long (year long in some places) project.
.
I chose MS, a supposedly lesser course over MTech though I got it. I chose IITM over the supposedly better places – IISc, IITK and IITD, though I got admits there. And guess what? I’m having a FANTASTIC time here!! I THOROUGHLY ENJOY the work I do, the place everything! That’s because this was the best thing for ME.
.
Please DO NOT do ANYTHING simply because others are doing, or because its the politically correct thing to do. Do what YOU want to do ![]()
.
A Caveat: In MS, unlike MTech, you’ll come directly under your guide. Choose your guide well. Many profs are good, but not all. There will be some profs who’ll give you an MS in 1 1/2 or 2 years itself, provided you’ve done good work. There will be some who’ll be particular that you work for 3 years. There’ll be some who’ll guide very well. There’ll be some who will not give much guidance. Every IIT will have profs of both kind, and naturally, we being inside, cannot publicly speak our mind about each prof individually
Ask around before choosing a guide.
.
I hope this gives at least some direction to think in so as to decide between MS and MTech. Next part (hopefully I write it!) may be on the interviews, or on choosing the institute.. Please do ask if you have any clarifications, or if you have a specific question in mind.

I think you should also come up with a post comparing MS in the US VS MS/M Tech in India.
March 31, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Yeah I’d really appreciate that! If you have the time that is.
I’m currently going around in circles with this one.
March 31, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Hmmm.. I’ll write it up then. I do have some experience with GRE also..
April 1, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Hello Sir,
Its a good post. I want to seek some info from u regarding where to apply or atleast find info on the net regaring Gate. I qualified Gate 2009 with 552 score, 97.63 %tile and 996 rank. I am not getting info about other IITs offering MS courses except IITM and IITD.I will be very grateful to u if u help me in this regard. Thanks..
April 1, 2009 at 8:09 pm
IITB does not have an MS program. Neither does IIT KGP. Not sure about IITG and IITR. You can post in Orkut GATE communities or http://www.gatementor.com for more info..
April 1, 2009 at 8:14 pm
And I’m not sir!! I’m also a student only
April 3, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Thank you so much Karthik for this post. This was really helpful.

Hey, I’m writing that one comparing PG education here and abroad. Exams coming up
so only delay..
April 19, 2009 at 4:57 pm
hi,karthik
i have got a call for ms(r) from IIT(M).
what would be syllabus of written test& interview.
how shoud i prepare 4 test+interview.?
April 19, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Hey Praveen,
Wait for the call letter. That’ll have the details. Else call the office/mail them and ask..
April 24, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Hi Praveen,
did u get the call from cse dept.? was it communicated by post?(couldn’t find any shortlist on the dept website)
April 24, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Hi Sushil,
Call letters have been/being dispatched. Mails have been sent..
May 9, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Thanks a lot for the info, dosth! But I wish you can elaborate more on what the screening tests and interviews will focus on or the way they are conducted at IITs. It will help us in preparing for them. Have a nice day!
May 9, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Hi,
Thank you so much for this post.. it was very useful.. earlier i didn’t know the difference between MS and MTech. I am doing my B.E in CS in a not-so-reputed college in chennai. I’ve just got 73% till now ( currently in my 6th sem) in the course.
1. Will a high GRE score let me get admission in a very good US university ?
2. Is the reputation of the under grad college important for getting admission in a good university in USA ?
May 9, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Swarna:Thanks
Regarding specific tests, they keep varying every year, so hard to predict..
Lucky: Thanks a lot
1. “A bad score will keep you out of a university, but a good score is not enough to get you in” says a univ website (I think its Duke or Dartmouth). That pretty much sums it up.
2. We’ll never know how important it is to a specific university (changes across universities), but its generally considered.
May 9, 2009 at 11:26 pm
In most of the US universities , if we want to do PhD ,they want us to study MS before we go for PhD .
If thats the case, if i had already done MTech in India, and when i aaply for PhD in some US university, should i do MS before i go for PhD in that univeristy ??????
May 10, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Can we do MS in USA after ME/Mtech here in India..
May 10, 2009 at 5:12 pm
sure you can, but is it really called for? If its going to serve your purpose, there’s no reason why you can’t..
May 10, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Thank you so much… for timely reply.
June 4, 2009 at 2:34 am
[...] many posts are as much about me as they are about him. I had blogged about IIT Interviews and choosing between MS and MTech. He’s written a lot of stuff that I wanted to, but was too lazy to write after these two [...]
June 5, 2009 at 12:03 am
There’s one disadvantage for MS though. It can really go lagging and you may take more years to complete it!
I don’t know why they have this two different programs, in U.S they seem to have only MS and manage quite well.. Instead of two diff degrees in one field and separate admission criteria, IITs should go for one single course and that should be a research oriented one!
Well, I am appearing for the IISc interview this time, hope to get through!
June 5, 2009 at 12:23 am
Hi Saika,
I did mention about the duration. You’re right.. MS can drag.
In the US, they have an “MS” only, but there are two options – MS by Coursework and MS by Thesis. MS by coursework is like MTech here, with emphasis on coursework. MS by Thesis is like MS here, with lesser courses and a thesis to be submitted at the end. They essentially have the same programs as we do, but named differently
All the best for your IISc interviews!
June 10, 2009 at 3:44 pm
well i realy need ur help….
can u give me an idea as of hw much %score is needed in gate for m.tech in cs…
n wat is d scope of m.tech/india..
June 10, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Hi Rashi,
Percentile is not a good metric for a cut-off, as the number of GATE takers change, but the seats remain pretty constant. The top 250 or so get MTech CS in some IIT.. What do you mean by “scope”? That’s pretty vague.. If its an euphemism for pay, you have a good chance of getting anywhere from 5 lpa to 12 lpa
June 10, 2009 at 8:51 pm
wow many thnks 4 a quick reply…..
ok can u guess on an average hw many students take GATE…m totaly flusterd rite nw srry 4 disturbing again…..dese many details arent available on net na….
June 10, 2009 at 9:43 pm
No problem
No need to guess. A bit more than 17, 500 students wrote GATE CS 2007, around 18, 500 wrote GATE CS 2008 and ~42, 000 students took GATE CS 2009!
I’m guessing GATE 2009 will also have high participation.. Lesser jobs around, so more people trying to study. Better prepare hard!
June 23, 2009 at 9:54 pm
thnks again …..[:)]
and does m.tech prepration realy need coaching ((actualy my family isnt ready 4 m.tech, dey insist on doing mba))…so dat i can giv d paper widout informing dem…n also i hv just entered in 3rd yr..so wats d ryt tym 2 start d prepration…

Hello Karthrags,
I have got through the MS interview in EC dept. of IISc.I have opted for Signal Processing.
I have got nw call from ISRO.ISRO has been a dream company for me nxt only to NASA.Also ISRO sponsors after 3years of experience for higher studies in India.I have to opt for amongst the 2.
Opting for MS/ISRO which wuld be beneficial?
How are the prospects for Signal Processing ahead?
How do we choose area for research ..do we have to be very specific?
The flow we need to follow to gear up for MS within 1and1/2 to 2yrs?
Also in various recruitments its written MTech ,are MS students also eligible for it.
June 29, 2009 at 1:06 am
Hi Neetronic,
Tough one! Congrats on getting calls from IISc and ISRO. What do you want to become? Prof or research scientist? This is one question to answer. Another is this: what are the chances of getting into ISRO after MSc engg at IISc? Third is this: consider the cases of you 1. joining ISRO now, and 2. doing MSc engg and then joining IISc. Can you grow more higher at ISRO in the next two years, than if you did MSc and then entered IISc? Guess you need to talk to people already at IISc and ISRO and answer these questions and decide based on them. All the best
July 6, 2009 at 7:00 am
Thankyou Karthrags for your cogent reply.I will be going into R&D.MS is given more value in ISRO,-from a person in ISRO.
July 2, 2009 at 9:12 am

please can anybody help me in providing details of getting career at isro.
July 29, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Hi,
I’ve read all the blogs regarding your GATE preparation and all. I want to know was it only self and group study or you guys took coaching from any institute. Is coaching necessary? Your information would be very helpful.
Thanks.
July 29, 2009 at 8:25 pm
We didn’t take coaching, and we feel coaching isn’t necessary at all.. But it varies from person to person. We did attend the mock tests from gateforum. They were very useful..
July 29, 2009 at 9:57 pm
ok thanks a lot. Can you tell me which other books or study materials you found useful and referred apart from the text books for GATE preparation?
Awaiting your reply.

I have done MSc. in computers from pune university. After that i joined IT. Now i have 5+ years experience in Java/J2EE..i am working as a Senior Software Engineer in enterprise application area. I have following queries regarding MTech:
1) Will at this stage doing MTech will be of any use ?
2) I think MTech is towards systems and research. What kind of job profile i can expect after MTech?
3) I will be spending 2 years of time for MTech means in these 2 years i will have to sacrifies for years income. Is it really worth? What package/role i can expect after completing MTech.
4) For which companies i can apply after MTech. (sepcially in pune)?
August 24, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Hi Sandeep,
1. Depends on why you want to do an MTech. An MTech helps you to switch lines, or get back to academia.
Package – average was about 7 to 7.5 lpa last year..
2. After MTech, there is no particular “job profile” you can expect. Placements are mostly common.
3. Answer connected to your reply to 1
4. no idea
August 31, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Hi karthrags,
Thanks for yours post, its really good, Can you please help me out with below doubts:
I did my B.tech from NIT in 2006 and have experience of around three years in some reputed s/w industries.I will be very grateful to you ,if you can please clarify below doubts
1. will I get any advantage with my work ex. in regards of percentile
2. Is there any special masters program for working professional. If yes the really appreciate
if you can provide me the details as Not found much on net.
3. What is the stipend offered to Full time m tech program and is there ne for part timers also
4. Can you suggest me some some good books for the
preparation Mtech(CS).
5 M.tech part-time is 3 yrs duration,if I am correct,apart from what is the edge of Full-time
over part-time
Waiting for Response.
Thanks so much
Amit
September 3, 2009 at 12:14 am
Hi Amit,
1. Nope.
3. Full time MTechs is 8k per month as of now..
4. Text books are the best.
I don’t have any idea of part-time or professional masters..

hi,karthrags.thanks for such a nice blog.I’m doing my 7th sem B.E.,(ECE).I had the confusion of choosing Mtech or MS and ur blog helped me to resolve it.I want 2 go for research ‘n i want to go for a specialization. On the other hand,I cant afford a MS in US so I want to do my higher studies in India.Does IITM offers a MS program that concentrates more on Thesis than on Coursework?
September 11, 2009 at 1:32 am
Yes, IITM and IITD do
September 13, 2009 at 12:04 pm
hi.. its was a nice post.. Can you help me with one issue..
I am in my 4th year Btech(CSE) from IIIT Hyderabad. I am interested in doing MS from India. The options I though are:
i)Converting to dual degree and doing MS from our college only
ii) MS from IIM or IID (Is gate required, If yes what you be reasonable score to get into them)
I am not able to decide which one to choose and also state if I have any other options
September 14, 2009 at 3:39 am
Hi Akhilesh,
Write GATE and try for the IITs. IIIT is good, but IIT is better, and its always good to try for higher stuff
October 8, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Hi I m planning to take up my GATE next year(2011). Does my 4 years of work experince will speak(help me in getting good job) after my PG in IIT? Or I ll be treated as a fresher?
October 9, 2009 at 12:22 am
I’m not sure. By default, your experience will not count, but you can talk with the company representatives and ask for a better profile..
October 22, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Dear brother
Hi. i am a graduate in chemical engineering 2009 passout. I applied for M.S.Research in IITD and IITM this year. i just wanted to know the future prospects for students who finish their M.S.Research other than opting for teaching. Please help me brother.
October 22, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Hi Goutham,
future prospects are mostly same as MTech.
October 23, 2009 at 8:44 pm
hi…i want to ask some of my doubts ..i have applied for MS from IIT-M for JAN 2010 without any GATE score …and today i got an email from IIT-M regarding my interview schedule ..my ques are…..
1)will they consider me for MS without a GATE score…
2)if yes then what type of ques i have to prep for the interview..
Regards,
girish
October 25, 2009 at 10:14 am
!! You’ll need a valid GATE score to get admission!
October 25, 2009 at 10:15 am
If you’re a regular candidate, that is. I don’t think GATE scores are needed for sponsored/services people..
October 24, 2009 at 2:09 am
Nice post Karthik. I have a few questions for you.
Let me first give you my background:
- I passed out B.Tech in EEE in 2003 – but I must say my performance was really bad
- I joined MBA in 2004 in a reputed university (I got 28th rank in ICET – state wide entrance exam for MBA/MCA)
- I couldn’t complete it until 2007 because of marriage, kid and some unfortunate incidents. But I got distinction this time.
-I’m currently taking a DW/BI certification program in USA (offered by a university). I’m also worked in software field.
-I’m very much interested to do MS in India (in a year or two)The reason is, really want to know more and research the DW/BI field.
Questions:
-what are my options (for MS)?
-How do you apply for MS Research program in IITM? Given my poor academics till now, how can I improve my prospects?
-I’m also considering IIIT Hyderabad. How will be my chances there? (to get in)
October 25, 2009 at 10:13 am
IITB and IITM have good profs in the area you’re interested in. Not sure about other IITs. You’ll have to ask around.. I think you’ll have to write GATE to get in.
November 17, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Karthik,
who are the profs dealing with DW/BI at IITM and how good is this area @IITM?
October 28, 2009 at 1:42 am
Hi,
I don’t have any preparation for GATE 2010 right now. I know it wont be possible to get it through in 3 months as I am in a job now. But would it be good to have an experience of it or to give it with full preparation
October 28, 2009 at 1:52 am
Even if you didn’t prepare, give it a shot. The experience will be hugely beneficial. Prepare at least two or three subjects though..
November 11, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Hi Karthik,
you mentioned that IITM is pretty good for VLSI , what is your assessment for DBMS and related areas at IITM, going through the department website i noticed that there wasnt any dedicated “database managment group” as in case of IITB and also the areas pertaining to Databases have not been cited as a focus area in the website, only 2 profs have cited “Databases” as their are of interest & the “artificial intelligence & database lab” link too is dysfunctional, all of it gives the impression that databases & related areas are not the focus areas of IITM?…..having said that there are a couple of queries i wish u could answer:-
1. is it still ok to consider IITM if one is interested in databases?
2. going by whatever is available on the? net i.e insti websites & forums it seems IITB is the place to be for databases, what is ur take on it?
3. what about algo & data mining at IITM? avg/good/great?
eagerly looking fwd 2 ur response
November 11, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Hi Sushil,
Welcome to my blog
Good to see someone who’s done some homework before asking!
Talk to someone there. Try Chander Iyer, or Sree or Rakesh.. They’ll be having department pages with contact info.
Yes, IITM is very good in VLSI, including the CS aspects of VLSI. And yes, IITM is not great for DMBS. There aren’t much courses on DBMS and not many profs working on DBMS. You’d do better to go to IITB or some other IIT that does considerable work in DBMS (heard that even in IITB, not many actually work on databases as such. You’ll have to contact someone there) To your questions:
1. No
2. Probably. Since I’m not there, I’m not really qualified to comment
3. I’d say between good and great. If you include machine learning and all that, I’d say great. We’ve got two really good profs working on these areas, two newly joined profs on this area and one or two more who might probably join. Strongly recommend IITM for this. Think IITB is also into all this big time. Check them out as well.
November 12, 2009 at 12:41 am
Wow that was a real fast response..thanks a ton for the info Karthik. There is one more fundamental issue(its actually an apprehension) on which i would like to get some insider info from you ..it has always been my belief that the top rated universities in the world put a lot of emphasis on their research output and hence give due weightage to the PG scholars involved in research, but there is this notion in some quarters that IITs are UG centric(given the hype that the IIT UGs generate)and that PG students are treated as 2nd tier, that UG students get the lion share of resources and attention,i have even come across posts in forums where people claim that there are profs at IITs who openly rebuke PGs as 2nd tier(as extreme as it may sound)..such notions might be unfounded but surely were disappointing and left me wondering “is it really the case”? is there an undercurrent of UG bias and PG neglect @ IITs? is it that the PG scholars have to grudgingly put up with this bias? i sincerely hope not and what gave me hope was ur intro in this blog where you say “And guess what? I’m having a FANTASTIC time here!! I THOROUGHLY ENJOY the work I do, the place everyting!”, coz someone can’t be this happy if this apprehension was true… , i feel it is fundamental coz there are many people who want to join a PG research program to really enjoy the research work and not for anything else, such ppl will have to think twice before joining a PG program @IIT if this apprehension is true, hope you will understand my inhibitions and give the real picture @ IITM on this issue
November 13, 2009 at 9:45 am
hi, i am preparing for iit jam entrance for msc course.iam graduate in biotechnology subject.iam doing right or not bcoz people say there is no scope in biotech.what other course can i do to uplift myself.
November 14, 2009 at 2:30 am
You’ll have to talk to people in the particular field you’re interested in.. It does look to me though that biotech will be one of the MOST important areas soon, if not already
November 30, 2009 at 12:08 am
hi….
i want admission in m tech at iits or nits in year 2011,is any other way to get in rather than gate bcoz i have missed it
November 30, 2009 at 3:39 am
for 2011, you can write GATE 2011, in Feb 2011
December 3, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Great post!
May 10, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I don’t think so.. Maybe you should mail the admissions coordinator of the univ you’re interested in to get authentic info.
July 6, 2009 at 9:33 am
Oh, that’s good. All the best!
November 12, 2009 at 1:27 am
Hmm.. First, you’d probably be knowing that IITs are primarily a teaching institution, unlike IISc or MIT, which are research institutions. So there’d be researchers as well as students. When there are two groups, not many can be unbiased. Most profs would either lean towards UG or towards PG. I cannot talk about the other departments, but in CS, most of the profs prefer PGs, because they are the ones who get the work done. In particular, MS and PhD. BTech and MTech are course programs and students will mostly be swamped with assignments. So they will not be able to contribute to research much, unlike researchers. In CS, quite a few profs explicitly state that they prefer researchers (my prof, for example). Basically, you do good work, you’re respected, irrespective of the program you’re in.
THERE IS NO HOSTILITY / COLDNESS BETWEEN BTECHS AND MTECHS!!
There would be some BTechs who think they’re good; there’d be some profs who think BTechs are better. But this CERTAINLY is not the case in general. I know quite a few guys in BTech; they’re all smart and sharp, but almost never aloof or supercilious. Its just that they’re 20 year olds and in PG there are many people who’ve worked before coming here, some who’re 30+, and this gap probably acts against better cohesion. (This is another common opinion outside, and might be true at other IITs about which I don’t know. At least at IITM, it isn’t the case)
Some examples: my research is with a dual degree student; a one and half year long project with about 10 BTechs; at least 5 assignments with BTechs; astro club observation sessions; music club joint practice and discussions; Shaastra. The list is endless.. hope you get the picture
Having said all that, yes, I do agree that there is some preferential treatment to BTechs. What is less commonly known is that there is also preferential treatment to PGs in other parameters. Placements is a BIG example: financial companies, who pay in the range of 10 – 15 lpa, generally take only BTechs. At the same time, most of the tech companies take BTechs and PGs, mostly paying PGs a lakh or two more. This is because PGs are exposed to more advanced tech stuff.
I can keep quoting examples and raise points
bottomline: there’ll be bias towards or against wherever you go; cannot avoid that. In the CS department of IITM, its mostly neutral or towards PGs. As far as I know, there’s no overt contempt or hostility or whatever to PGs (note all the qualifiers; my knowledge is very restricted and I really cannot comment about the rest) And this reply became a small post by itself
